Why do the dates of public holidays in the UAE change every year?
The changing dates of Islamic holidays in the UAE-and in the Islamic world in general-are due to their reliance on the Hijri calendar, a lunar calendar based on the moon's cycle, unlike the globally accepted Gregorian calendar, which is based on the solar cycle.
Muslims rely on the Hijri calendar to determine the dates of religious occasions such as Ramadan, Eid al-Fitr, and Eid al-Adha. Since the Hijri year is approximately 10 to 12 days shorter than the Gregorian year, these occasions occur earlier each year relative to the Gregorian calendar.
For this reason, the dates of public holidays associated with these occasions change every year.
