A Moroccan male involved in an armed robbery and illegal detention has been sentenced three years in jail by the Dubai Criminal Court, The incident happened in Dubai's Naif district, where a group of masked attackers broke into a travel and tourism company and kidnapped a sizable sum of money while dragging an employee.
Court documents state that the incident took place on March 30, 2024 evening. Approaching the office and knocking on the door, the Moroccan defendant pretended to be a frequent guest. Five masked individuals aggressively entered the grounds when one staffer, a Guinean national, opened it. Quickly locking the door behind them, the attackers stopped anyone from fleeing or looking for aid. They physically restrained the staff member and brandished machetes to cause terror, so overwhelming him.
The intruder did not waste any time requesting access to the safe of the workplace. They accosted the worker, threatened him, and forcibly grabbed the key from his pocket. Later on, the victim described the horrific experience in front of courts: "Several masked individuals came in wielding machetes as soon as I opened the door. They assaulted me, looked through my pockets, located the safe's key, and grabbed the money. Before quickly leaving, the offenders grabbed Dh247,000, belonging to the company owner.
The distraught employee reported the robbery straight away to the police. Authorities started looking and found the Moroccan suspect. The defendant first confirmed his involvement upon being arrested, but he said he had been compelled to engage in the crime. He said that a group of men-described as having African heritage-had forced him to help with the theft.
The suspect added more information under police interrogation, claiming to have been attacked in Sharjah one day before the incident. Three individuals had attacked him, pilfers his stuff, and then put pressure on him to participate in the heist. His account is that they promised to return his belongings just in exchange for cooperation. The defense also alleged that the offenders harbored personal resentment toward the owner of the company. He said they planned the robbery as a kind of retribution since they had earlier given alcohol to the travel agency but had not been paid for it.
A police officer who testified before courts verified that the Moroccan suspect followed this line of events all through the inquiry. Authorities stayed dubious about his assertions, though. The prosecution said that his claim-that he had been under pressure to perpetrate the crime-was not supported by any convincing data. Moreover, his defense suffered as he took part actively in the preparation and execution of the heist.
The court determined upon looking over all the facts that the defendant's justification lacked credibility. The judges decided that his assertions of compulsion fell short of clearing him of guilt. He was thereby sentenced to three years in prison after being found guilty of armed robbery and illegal detention.
This example reminds us rather sharply of the repercussions of aggressive crimes in Dubai. To guarantee public safety, the city keeps rigorous rules and quick court processes. Particularly when incorporating threats, violence, and illegal incarceration, armed robbery is handled rather seriously and offenders face significant fines.
