Thailand has introduced stricter measures to curb the growing misuse of visa-exemption entries and short-term stay extensions, following a noticeable rise in foreigners remaining in the country for extended periods without obtaining the proper long-term visas.

A significant concern for Thai authorities has been the common practice of travelers making brief trips to neighboring countries-especially via land borders-to re-enter Thailand and reset their visa-exempt stay.

These “border runs” have long been exploited by individuals aiming to live in the country indefinitely under the guise of tourism.

Long-term tourist stays visa in Thailand

However, conditions at land borders have changed dramatically. Crossings into Cambodia, for example, remain closed due to heightened security tensions and military activity, shutting down one of the most frequently used entry routes for such runs.

Officials acknowledge that this loophole has enabled not only long-term overstayers but also individuals engaged in illegal activities. A number of foreigners involved in scams and unlawful schemes have already been detained and, in some cases, imprisoned.

Immigration authorities emphasize that using tourist visas or visa exemptions to reside in Thailand permanently is a clear violation and that those wishing to stay long-term must obtain the appropriate visa category.

stricter screening procedures

Immigration officers, particularly in Phuket, have now adopted a more rigorous screening process. Travelers relying on repeated visa-exempt entries may be asked for detailed information about their itinerary, accommodation, and the true purpose of their visit.

Entry patterns suggesting “visa runs” that allow foreigners to remain in Thailand for 150 days or more are now flagged as irregular and subject to investigation.

Visa agencies have also been instructed to stop organizing organized border-run trips using minibuses-an arrangement that was once a common workaround for extending stays.

Stricter Immigration Checks from November 2025 Onward

Authorities have confirmed that immigration inspections have become significantly more stringent. The following situations now attract increased scrutiny and may result in refusal of entry:

  • Frequent visa-exempt entries within a short timeframe
  • Requests to extend visa-exempt stays
  • Dependence on consecutive exemptions instead of obtaining a proper long-term visa
  • Travel behavior that suggests residency without the appropriate visa
  • Quick re-entries shortly after leaving Thailand

Thailand continues to be a popular destination for winter travelers, digital nomads, retirees, and long-stay visitors.

However, officials stress that suitable visa categories already exist for nearly every scenario, making misuse of the visa-exempt system unnecessary.

Legitimate Visa Options for Long-Term Stays

The government highlights several legal pathways for foreigners wishing to remain in Thailand for extended periods:

  • Tourist Visa via eVisa: Double entry, offering 2×60 days plus an optional 30-day extension
  • DTV Visa: Valid up to five years for remote workers, Muay Thai trainees, and Thai culinary students
  • Retirement Visa: Allows annual extensions for eligible retirees
  • LTR Visa (Long-Term Resident): Available through the Board of Investment for specific qualified individuals

With these options widely accessible, Thai authorities emphasize that abusing the visa waiver system through back-to-back entries or repeated extensions is no longer tolerated-especially for individuals unable to meet financial requirements for long-term stay permits.
