Sharjah Roads and Transport Authority has launched smart traffic signals to enhance traffic flow and safety, part of a green initiative aimed at reducing congestion and emissions.

Sharjah - Al Khaleej:

The Sharjah Roads and Transport Authority has launched smart traffic signals as part of an integrated system designed to implement a "Green Traffic" initiative for vehicles. This advancement aims to enhance traffic flow, reduce congestion, and increase road safety, aligning with the ongoing efforts to improve infrastructure throughout the emirate.

Eng. Youssef Khamis Al Othmani, the Chairman of the Sharjah Roads and Transport Authority, stated that the project is part of a series of smart initiatives designed to develop the transport sector in the emirate. By leveraging the latest global technologies, the authority aims to enhance the efficiency of road infrastructure and offer innovative solutions that meet the emirate's aspirations in sustainability and smart transformation. He emphasized that the "Green Traffic" system represents a significant shift in traffic management, helping to reduce stop times, alleviate congestion, and improve safety through better organization of pedestrian and vehicle movement.

He further assured that work will continue on developing traffic systems to provide a smoother and safer travel experience for all road users by using intelligent systems adaptable to real-time traffic conditions. The authority greatly values environmental considerations, as the current system helps decrease emissions caused by frequent stops and starts, thus supporting efforts toward a sustainable future.

Modern Technologies

Al Othmani explained that the new system employs smart traffic signals utilizing advanced technologies to manage the flow of vehicles and pedestrians more effectively and flexibly. This allows for simultaneous and organized passage through traffic signals, relying on sensors and smart devices to analyze traffic volume and adjust signal timings accordingly at pedestrian crossing points.

He noted that this system enables drivers to experience what is known as the "Green Traffic" system, allowing continuous passage through several green traffic lights without stopping, provided they adhere to the recommended speed of 40 to 50 kilometers per hour. He reaffirmed that the project is a crucial step toward achieving multiple goals, including reducing vehicle stop time and mitigating congestion, particularly during peak hours. Additionally, it aims to lower risks associated with random pedestrian crossings and supports environmental sustainability efforts by reducing emissions, thereby enhancing Sharjah's commitment to ecological preservation.

This project is part of a broader vision adopted by the authority to update the network of transportation and roads, encompassing complete projects to improve infrastructure, enhance digital transformation, and provide smart services that ensure the comfort and safety of everyone while achieving sustainable growth across various sectors in the emirate.
