Saudi Arabia continued up its active anti-corruption effort in 2024, detaining 1,708 people including several senior officials on allegations of wrongdoing.
Working with other government and security agencies, the Control and Anti-Corruption Authority (Nazaha) made the arrests following 37,124 inspection trips and nearly 4,000 investigations conducted over several parts of the Kingdom, From misuse of power and accepting bribes to money laundering and other kinds of financial misbehavior, the charges against the defendants ranged.
Nazaha stayed unrelenting in confronting corruption in government institutions throughout the year, managing a significant volume of criminal charges involving staff members of many important state entities, These initiatives fit the instructions of Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, both of whom have underlined the Kingdom's will to eradicate corruption and guarantee openness and responsibility in all spheres of government, Targeting a sustainable economy built on integrity, openness, and good governance, their vision supports Saudi Arabia's more general objectives under Vision 2030.
Nazaha has carried out comprehensive inspections and investigations throughout the previous years, leading to the responsibility of many people including high-ranking officials, princes and even top state employees at several tiers of government, The vast scope of these initiatives in 2024 spoke to the authority's relentless will in eradicating corruption from the public as well as the private sectors.
Nazaha conducted 2,181 inspection trips and 360 investigations in January 2024, which resulted in the arrest of 149 people some of which were subsequently let on bond, With 3,209 inspection tours and 288 investigations producing 126 arrests, February saw even more notable activity. Following 1,657 and 1,790 inspection tours, March and April brought even more improvement with 146 and 166 arrests respectively. With 3,800 inspection visits and 446 investigations, May carried on the pattern and resulted in the detention of 112 people.
During the Hajj season in June, Nazaha carried out an amazing 9,600 inspection visits at the holy sites and associated agencies, so elevating the campaign. Following 382 investigations, this broad initiative produced 155 arrests. Following months saw ongoing activity as Nazaha conducted thousands of inspection tours every month. For example, 3,000 visits and 266 investigations in July produced 149 arrests. Comparably, in August, 2,900 tours and 380 investigations produced 139 arrests.
Nazaha's activity stayed always strong as the year went on. Three thousand nine hundred inspection trips and 289 investigations in September resulted in 136 arrests. October witnessed 1,900 visits and 322 investigations yielding 121 arrests; November's 1,600 visits and 370 investigations yielded 164 arrests.
