Dubai Roads Authority has unveiled a comprehensive project to upgrade Al Safa Street, including new bridges and tunnels, reducing travel time and increasing traffic capacity.

In line with the directives of the wise leadership, Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority has announced a significant development project for Al Safa Street. Spanning from its intersection with Sheikh Zayed Road to Al Wasl Street, the project covers 1500 meters and aims to enhance traffic flow and accommodate the growing urbanization and population of Dubai. The initiative includes the construction of two bridges and two tunnels, totaling 3120 meters in length, alongside improvements to surface roads and traffic signals. The project is expected to reduce travel time on Al Safa Street from 12 minutes to just 3 minutes and double the street's capacity from 6,000 to 12,000 vehicles per hour in both directions.

Matar Al Tayer, Director General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors at the Roads and Transport Authority, emphasized that the development is part of a broader plan to upgrade the area's road network, including Umm Suqeim and Al Wasl Streets. The development serves a bustling area known for its cultural, sports, and tourist activities, featuring key destinations such as City Walk, Coca-Cola Arena, educational institutions, residential areas, and luxury hotels and restaurants. The project pays special attention to creative and aesthetic elements, improving pedestrian and cycling paths and enhancing urban spaces for community interaction.

Bridges and Tunnels

The project will extend from Al Safa's intersection with Sheikh Zayed Road to its intersection with Al Wasl. It involves constructing two bridges: a four-lane bridge serving traffic from Al Wasl to Sheikh Zayed and Financial Center Roads, with a capacity of 6,400 vehicles per hour, and another two-lane bridge serving traffic from Al Satwa in the same direction, accommodating 2,800 vehicles per hour. Two tunnels are also part of the design; one guiding traffic from Sheikh Zayed and Financial Center Roads to Al Wasl Street with a capacity of 3,200 vehicles per hour, and a second tunnel at the Al Wasl-Al Safa intersection, 750 meters long, with a total capacity for 6,400 vehicles per hour. The street expansion will increase the lanes from three to four in each direction, integrating free-flow and signal-controlled lanes.

Comprehensive Plan

The Al Safa Street project complements a larger strategy to enhance the road network. The plan includes developments on Al Wasl Street from its junction with Umm Suqeim to the junction with the 2nd of December Street, spanning 15 kilometers. Al Wasl's upgrade features six intersections and five tunnels over 3,850 meters, transforming the road from two to three lanes in each direction. Additionally, Umm Suqeim Street’s enhancement includes six intersections and increases the street's capacity to 16,000 vehicles per hour, improving connectivity between Sheikh Zayed Road, Al Khail Road, Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road, and Emirates Road, and cutting travel time from Jumeirah Street to Al Khail Road from 20 minutes to 6 minutes.
