The UAE government announced that the new traffic law (Federal Decree-Law No. 14 of 2024) will come into effect on March 29. This announcement was made via the UAE Legislation platform, which publishes and regulates laws.

Suspension or Revocation of a License

The competent authorities may suspend or revoke a driver's license in certain cases, such as loss of legal capacity or physical fitness, or if traffic safety procedures require it. The implementing regulations of the law specify the necessary procedures in such cases.

The Traffic Control Authority, in coordination with the Licensing Authority, may also suspend any driver's license in accordance with traffic safety and security requirements.

The executive regulations of this Decree-Law specify the procedures and controls for suspending, canceling, or refusing to renew driver's licenses and permits, as well as the controls for re-evaluating and qualifying drivers.

Driving license suspension violations in the UAE

The new law gives traffic authorities the right to stop any driver caught committing one of the following six offenses:

These laws aim to enhance traffic safety and reduce accidents.

The new law stipulates that any driver who accidentally causes the death of a person while driving shall be punished by imprisonment or a fine of no less than AED 50,000, or both.

The penalty shall be more severe, with a minimum of one year in prison and a fine of no less than AED 100,000, in the following cases:
