Civil Defense cautions against thunderstorms affecting Saudi regions until Saturday
With the impending thunderstorms, the General Directorate of Civil Defense in Saudi Arabia has issued an urgent warning to the public encouraging citizens to exercise great caution since severe weather conditions are expected to last till Saturday. The Civil Defense underlined the hazards these storms bring and advised the people to remain alert and informed, particularly while on travel or participating in outdoor activities.
The Civil Defense claims that several parts of Saudi Arabia may get thunderstorms, with flash floods and dangerous weather possibilities. The directorate advised people to stay away from places vulnerable to flash floods, such valleys where fast-forming rivers could cause great hazards. To further reduce any risks, the Civil Defense further underlined the need of following all safety recommendations given through media means. Specific recommendations have been issued on swimming in pools and warning against participating in these sports while strong storms are on their way.
Makkah, projected to see light to moderate rainfall, is one of the areas most impacted by the present weather projection. In some places, this precipitation might cause flash floods; also, it could produce possibly dangerous hailstorms and dust-stirring winds. The Civil Defense advised everyone to stay home during the storms and refrain from needless travel since the mix of these factors can cause dangerous circumstances for residents and visitors in Makkah.
Apart from Makkah, various other parts of Saudi Arabia will suffer different degrees of rain. Medium to heavy rains forecast in the Hail, Tabuk, Al-Jouf, Northern Borders, Asir, and Jazan areas could cause localized flooding and disturbance. The Civil Defense cautioned the people to stay vigilant, especially in these locations where the amount of rain can overflow drainage systems and create hazardous conditions on the roads.
The Eastern Province and Al-Baha districts will get mild to moderate rain showers meanwhile, although the Civil Defence nonetheless advised residents and guests in these areas to be ready for any variations in temperature. In the Madinah, Qassim, and Najran areas as well, light rain is anticipated and might cause poor visibility, slick road conditions, and increased risk of accidents.
The Civil Defense has regularly recommended the public to remain in safe, covered areas during thunderstorms and to actively follow weather reports. Having emergency kits containing basics like water, food, and medical supplies has been advised as part of efforts on emergency readiness. Response teams are on standby and will be used to help in any crises resulting from the weather, the Civil Defense has reassured the people.
Apart from the possible risks the storms bring, the strong winds forecast to accompany the thunderstorms could provide more difficulties including the danger of uprooting trees, destroying buildings, and so compromising visibility. Drivers have been advised to use additional care on the road, especially with regard to slowing down and making sure headlights are on for improved seeing during stormy or heavily raining weather.
The General Directorate of Civil Defense is dedicated to notify the public about any fresh developments, including updates on the weather and any adjustments to safety procedures, as the thunderstorms still affect Saudi Arabia. During the extreme weather occurrence, the directorate has underlined again the need of adhering to official advice and being alert to save lives and property.
