Canada’s 2025 wildfire season is shaping up to be the second worst on record as large areas continue to burn across the nation.

The area burned by wildfires so far this season ranks as the second-largest on record in Canada , according to government data.

In a technical briefing held this morning in Ottawa, officials from Public Safety Canada updated media outlets on the current state of multiple wildfires across the nation.

They reported that the greatest fire danger in July is anticipated to occur in southern British Columbia. Meanwhile, the Northwest Territories and Yukon are also expected to face increased wildfire risks.

This year's fire season, which has become the second worst since the devastating 2023 wildfire season, has already resulted in the consumption of 3.7 million hectares, an area six times the size of Prince Edward Island.

Historically, the 10-year average for wildfire seasons in Canada is approximately 800,000 hectares.

Environment and Climate Change Canada forecasts higher-than-normal temperatures across the nation through August, particularly in the eastern provinces from Manitoba onward, although the wildfire risks remain highest in the central and western regions.
