ABU DHABI – The future of transport in the capital has just shifted into high gear. If you live in Khalifa City or frequent the Corniche, get ready to see a lot more "driverless" cars on your streets.
The Integrated Transport Centre (ITC) announced on Monday a major expansion of its autonomous "Robotaxi" fleet, bringing the service out of isolated islands and into the heart of Abu Dhabi’s busiest residential and tourist hubs.
Here is everything you need to know about the new routes and how safe they really are.
Where Can You Ride Now?
Since 2021, Robotaxis have been cruising around Yas, Saadiyat, and Al Reem Islands. Under the new 2026 expansion, the service now covers high-density areas including:
- Khalifa City (A major residential hub for expats).
- Masdar City (The sustainable city).
- Rabdan.
- The Corniche: New routes will now link the scenic Abu Dhabi Corniche directly with the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, offering a futuristic tour of the city’s landmarks.
Is It Safe? (The 99.9% Stat)
For those hesitant to let an AI take the wheel, the numbers are reassuring. The ITC revealed that the autonomous fleet has maintained an impressive 99.9% safety rate. This reliability has driven a surge in popularity, with trip requests jumping by 150% in 2025 alone.
How to Book
You don't need a special government pass to try it. The service operates commercially and is accessible to everyone.
- The Apps: You can book your autonomous ride through the Uber app or the WeRide app (the operating partner).
- The Fleet: Operated in collaboration with Tawasul Transport, these vehicles are equipped with advanced sensors and monitoring systems to navigate complex traffic.
Why It Matters
"The expansion reinforces Abu Dhabi’s commitment to... a sustainable, efficient transport system," the ITC stated at the UMEX exhibition. By integrating these vehicles into daily life, Abu Dhabi is not just reducing carbon emissions but also cementing its status as a global playground for smart mobility.
The Bottom Line: Next time you need a ride from Khalifa City or a trip to the Mosque, check your Uber app—your driver might just be a robot.
