A minor earthquake with a magnitude of 3.0 rattled areas near New York City but caused no damage.

A minor earthquake shook the New York metropolitan area on Saturday night, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The tremor, which registered a magnitude of 3.0, occurred in Hasbrouck Heights, a suburb in New Jersey situated less than eight miles (13 kilometers) west of Central Park. The earthquake originated at a depth of approximately 6.2 miles (10 kilometers).

A resident from Brooklyn described the incident as a brief moment of swaying. Social media buzzed with reactions from those who felt it, including a lighthearted tweet from the official Empire State Building account affirming: “I AM FINE.”

This tremor was weaker than the 4.8-magnitude quake that struck Tewksbury, New Jersey, in 2024. Although a 3.0 magnitude quake is typically too mild to inflict damage, such seismic events are relatively rare in the northeastern United States.

New York City Emergency Management reported no significant impacts immediately following the quake.
