A 46-year-old man is charged with vandalizing Canada's National Holocaust Monument, defacing it with red paint. Authorities continue to investigate.
A 46-year-old man is facing charges following the vandalism of Canada's National Holocaust Monument earlier this month.
The Ottawa Police Service reported on Friday that the individual has been charged with mischief to a war memorial, mischief exceeding $5,000, and harassment by threatening conduct.
The suspect is expected to appear in court on Saturday.
On June 9, the monument was found defaced with the words “FEED ME” in red paint prominently displayed, along with additional red paint marks across its structure.
Prime Minister Mark Carney expressed his outrage at the defacement, emphasizing that the monument serves as a solemn place for mourning and remembrance.
The Ottawa Police Service's hate and bias crime unit continues its investigation.
Richard Marceau, vice-president of external affairs and general counsel at the Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs, highlighted the significance of the monument amid rising antisemitism.
"It was especially vile to see it vandalized and defaced," Marceau commented, while commending the swift action of the police. "This incident underscores the need for authorities to decisively address such acts of hatred and incitement."
