Lumo, the UAE-based company specializing in smart mobility and autonomous driving solutions, has announced the launch of a luxury self-driving robotaxi fleet in Abu Dhabi. This ambitious initiative comes as part of a collaboration with Mercedes-Benz and Momenta, a leading firm in artificial intelligence for autonomous vehicles.

The newly unveiled robotaxi fleet features Level 4 (L4) autonomous driving technology developed by Momenta, integrated into the latest generation Mercedes-Benz S-Class platform. This marks the first scalable robotaxi service to be built on a large-scale luxury vehicle production model.

Commercial operations for the fleet are scheduled to begin in Abu Dhabi by 2026. There are also plans on the table to expand the service into additional international markets during subsequent phases.

This strategic partnership brings together three major players in the field of smart transportation who share a unified vision: pushing forward towards a future where mobility is defined by cutting-edge technology and innovation.

Faisal Abdulaziz Al Bannai, Strategic Research and Advanced Technology Advisor to the President of the UAE and Secretary General of the Advanced Technology Research Council, described this alliance as "a reflection of engineering excellence and advanced autonomous driving technology." Al Bannai noted that such a gathering of expertise within the UAE is no coincidence but rather a direct result of the country’s commitment to creating an ideal environment for testing, developing, and showcasing next-generation mobility solutions. Joerg Burzer, Chief Technology Officer at Mercedes-Benz AG, stated: "Through our partnership with Momenta and Lumo, we are setting new standards for mobility by developing an innovative luxury robotaxi." He highlighted their focus on merging top-tier safety with comfort and style, establishing what he called a new global benchmark for smart transport.

Shouldong Cao, CEO of Momenta, added that this tripartite venture combines "a century of Mercedes-Benz engineering expertise with advanced AI from Momenta and outstanding local operational capabilities provided by Lumo." The robotaxi system leverages Momenta’s reinforcement learning model (R6), promising passengers a smart travel experience that marries safety with high-end quality.
