Dubai is expanding its Terminal 1 bridge at DXB airport. The project involves widening it from three lanes to four using advanced construction methods. Aimed at easing congestion as passenger numbers soar past 92 million in 2024, this initiative reflects RTA's ongoing commitment to enhancing transportation networks across the city.

In a bid to alleviate congestion and enhance customer experiences, Dubai is expanding the Terminal 1 bridge at Dubai International Airport. This development comes as passenger numbers have exceeded 92 million in 2024.

Mattar Al Tayer, Director General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors at RTA, emphasized the project's innovative approach: "We are widening the existing bridge from three to four lanes by constructing a new section using an advanced system of steel box girders coupled with a composite concrete slab."

Impact on Airport Traffic

He added that this engineering solution was chosen for its structural efficiency, allowing completion without traffic diversions on Airport Street or temporary supports beneath the bridge. This ensures seamless traffic flow and upholds rigorous safety standards.

The entire bridge spans 171 meters, including ramps, with a main span of nearly 70 meters. The project also entails improvements in road pavement, infrastructure services upgrades, landscaping works that harmonize with surrounding areas, and new street lighting for enhanced safety.

The expansion aims to increase vehicle capacity from 4,200 to 5,600 per hour-a significant boost of 33%.

Al Tayer highlighted RTA’s dedication to enhancing Dubai’s transport network: "The bridge expansion reflects RTA’s ongoing commitment to improving traffic flow and connectivity between key corridors and vital facilities like Dubai International Airport-the world's busiest airport for international passengers."

The initiative will bolster street capacity, augment safety measures, and reduce travel times during peak hours.

Significant upgrades have already been made along Airport Street-from Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road to Casablanca Street-encompassing bridges and tunnels at strategic points like Al Rashidiya and Nad Al Hamar Street. Additionally, surface-level junctions have been improved.

This comprehensive program has introduced a single-lane bridge providing direct access to Terminal 3; another connects directly to the DAEP complex; while one more facilitates movement from Airport Street to Casablanca Street sans signal stoppage.

An alternative route was also established from Al Garhoud to Terminals 1 and 3 alongside an expansion of Casablanca Street toward Al Garhoud Bridge-from three lanes to four.

By expanding both the Terminal 1 bridge and overall road capacity, RTA aims not only to future-proof accessibility at Dubai International Airport but also enhance connectivity throughout the emirate-solidifying Dubai’s status as a global nexus for travel and international events.
