A devastating incident occurred at Garrapata State Beach in California, where a Calgary man lost his life and his five-year-old daughter remains missing after both were swept into the ocean by a powerful wave.

Wave Claims Family During Visit

According to the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office, 39-year-old Yuji Hu was at the beach last Friday with his wife and two children. An unexpected six-metre-tall wave suddenly surged onto the shoreline, pulling their young daughter into the Pacific Ocean.

In an attempt to rescue her, both Hu and his wife lunged for their daughter but were caught by the same forceful wave and carried out to sea.

Rescue Efforts and Aftermath

A witness on the beach, aided by an off-duty California park officer, managed to pull Yuji Hu from the water. Attempts were made to revive him while his wife succeeded in making her way back to shore on her own. Emergency services transported both parents to a hospital where Hu tragically succumbed to his injuries. His wife received treatment for mild hypothermia.

The couple's younger child, aged two, was not injured during the incident and remains safe.

Search Continues for Missing Child

The search operation for their missing five-year-old daughter is ongoing. Authorities noted that she was last seen wearing a white shirt as efforts continue along the coast. Initial rescue activities included a large-scale search conducted from sunrise until sunset on Saturday with participation from U.S. Coast Guard personnel, state fire service teams, divers, and helicopter units. However, this wider search has since been suspended.

On Sunday, California State Parks continued shoreline patrols around Garrapata State Beach on foot in hopes of locating the missing girl or discovering further clues.
