Airlines suspend employees for inappropriate social media reactions following Charlie Kirk's shooting.
In the wake of last week's tragic shooting of Charlie Kirk, leading airlines including Delta, American, and United have taken decisive actions against employees who shared controversial social media posts regarding the incident. This move reflects a firm stance against content that contradicts corporate values.
Delta Air Lines CEO Ed Bastian revealed in an internal memo that certain employees' posts "went well beyond healthy, respectful debate" following the murder of activist Charlie Kirk. He emphasized that these expressions clash with Delta’s ethos and social media guidelines, resulting in employee suspensions pending further investigation.
American Airlines similarly addressed the issue, confirming that employees who appeared to endorse violence in their online posts were swiftly removed from active duty.
This corporate backlash comes amid mounting pressure from political figures to dismiss those celebrating or justifying acts of violence. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy criticized such behavior as "disgusting" and called for immediate dismissals of involved individuals, stressing that companies accountable for public safety cannot allow such conduct.
United Airlines followed suit by issuing a reminder to its pilots regarding adherence to their social media policies. The airline confirmed over the weekend it had also suspended staff members based on recent violations related to this sensitive matter.
In a statement underscoring their commitment to zero tolerance towards politically motivated violence or attempts at justification, United Airlines reiterated the importance of maintaining clear and consistent standards across interactions with both customers and employees.
