Abu Dhabi announces a project to install 1,000 new electric vehicle charging stations, enhancing its commitment to clean mobility and sustainability.

The Integrated Transport Centre "Abu Dhabi Mobility" under the Department of Municipalities and Transport announced a strategic investment in electric vehicle infrastructure. This initiative involves partnering with several operating companies for charging stations, through public-private partnership (PPP) contracts. These contracts encompass the supply, installation, operation, and maintenance of charging stations throughout the capital, Abu Dhabi.
This ambitious project aligns with the center's ongoing efforts to promote the shift towards clean mobility and reinforces the emirate's commitment to achieving carbon neutrality by 2050. The establishment of this charging network marks a significant step toward developing a public charging ecosystem that caters to sustainable transportation needs and supports the transition to more efficient, environmentally friendly transport solutions.
The first phase of the project will see the installation of 1,000 new charging stations at 400 strategic locations, including Abu Dhabi Island, Al Ain Region, and Al Dhafra Region. There are plans for a gradual increase in the number of stations annually in response to demand. The new stations will operate under the unified branding "Charge AD," with standardized charging rates of 0.7 AED per kilowatt-hour for slow charging and 1.2 AED per kilowatt-hour for fast charging.
The network will be bolstered through collaboration with key strategic partners to provide charging points in vital locations such as hotels and shopping centers, contributing to broader coverage tailored to the needs of electric vehicle users.
Dr. Abdullah Al Ghafli, Acting Director General of the Center, stated that this investment not only reflects the emirate's sustainable commitment but also highlights the central role of the Center as a major catalyst for technological transformation in the transport sector, by adopting innovative solutions based on artificial intelligence and modern technologies.
He emphasized that establishing a unified and extensive network of electric vehicle charging stations is essential for supporting the proliferation of these vehicles and enabling a more sustainable and intelligent community. Abu Dhabi is witnessing rapid growth in electric vehicle registrations, surpassing 15,000 registered electric vehicles in the first quarter of 2025, representing a 60% increase compared to the same period last year. Abu Dhabi Mobility aims to achieve that 50% of cars on Abu Dhabi roads will be electric by 2040, in support of the nation's vision for carbon neutrality.
