Abu Dhabi's new regulations streamline acquiring unique vehicle plate numbers.
The Department of Municipalities and Transport in Abu Dhabi has issued an administrative decision aimed at facilitating the purchase and ownership of distinctive vehicle plate numbers not previously owned. This move is expected to provide a transparent and straightforward mechanism for both citizens and residents to obtain unique plate numbers through streamlined procedures adhering to best regulatory practices. The Integrated Transport Center will oversee the implementation of this decision in coordination with relevant entities.
In Abu Dhabi, vehicle numbers are categorized into two groups: distinctive numbers and non-distinctive numbers. The distinctive category includes single, double, triple, and quadruple-digit plates, as well as certain five-digit ones under specific conditions, offering a wide array of choices for those interested in ownership.
The decision enables any citizen or resident to acquire multiple vehicle numbers and their ownership certificates. Once the acquisition process is complete, plate numbers can be transferred from possession to ownership, with the flexibility to sell or transfer them without restrictions at any time. Owners also have the option to link these numbers with a vehicle or keep them in their traffic file. Existing numbers can be acquired by paying specified fees based on their uniqueness level; each tier of distinction carries a defined cost. Previously issued distinctive numbers that were registered without formal ownership cannot be transferred or sold until proof of ownership is provided, except when transferring the number plate possession to immediate family members such as parents, siblings, spouses, or children according to approved procedures by the Integrated Transport Center.
Initially, during the first phase of implementing this decision, individuals must visit customer service centers personally to access this service. However, it will eventually be made available digitally via the 'TAMM' platform.
The Integrated Transport Center confirmed that users who currently have registered but unowned plates will receive a text message detailing the value necessary for acquisition once all legal requirements are satisfied.
