On Saturday morning, employees at a liquor store in Ashland, Virginia were shocked to find that the establishment had been broken into by an odd thief: a very drunk raccoon.
The animal, which is sometimes called the "masked bandit," was found asleep in the store's restroom, laying between a bin and the toilet. People say that the raccoon drank some alcohol from the lowest shelf while it was out at night.
Samantha Martin, an animal control officer for Hanover County, answered the call and took the raccoon, which was jokingly called "the suspect," to the Hanover County Animal Protection and Shelter. But first, it had to give it time to get over its drinking spree.
After a few hours of relaxation and a thorough checkup that showed no injuries other than what might have been a hangover, the raccoon was judged well enough to be released and safely returned to its native home later that day.
The break-in happened when the Ashland ABC store was closed for the holiday. When the crew came back on Saturday, they saw that many bottles had been broken and there were puddles of liquor all over the floor. During its uninvited visit, the raccoon seemed to prefer Scotch.
Officer Martin said that the raccoon probably got into the building by falling through one of the ceiling tiles and then going on "a full-blown rampage," trying out different types of booze.
The store's security camera only caught one fuzzy picture of this strange event, so it's hard to say how much booze the animal drank before falling asleep in the bathroom.
After the incident, Ashland ABC thanked Hanover County Animal Protection and Shelter on social media for their quick response and for giving their unexpected guest what they jokingly called a "sober ride home."
Officer Martin said that this strange event was "just another day in the life of an animal control officer."
