A young doctor from Andhra Pradesh, identified as Rohini from Guntur district, tragically ended her life after falling into severe depression following the rejection of her J-1 visa application by U.S. authorities.
She reportedly consumed sleeping pills at her residence in Hyderabad earlier today, and passed away before her family realized what had happened.
Her body has been sent for post-mortem examination, and local police have registered a case.
According to her mother, Rohini completed her MBBS degree in Russia several years ago before moving to the United States to pursue advanced medical training and research work.
For the past year, she had been trying to secure a J-1 visa, which would allow her to continue her residency and join a research program at a well-known medical university in the U.S.
However, recent visa restrictions introduced under the administration of former U.S. President Donald Trump made it increasingly difficult for researchers and professionals to obtain visas.
As a result, Rohini was forced to return to India a few weeks ago after failing to meet the tightened immigration requirements.
Since her return, she had been making repeated attempts to get her J-1 visa processed through the U.S. Consulate in Hyderabad.
At the same time, the American university where she had been admitted was urging her to join the research program immediately to avoid cancellation of her placement.
Although her visa application initially passed the early screening stages, it was ultimately rejected during the final review-news that reportedly pushed her into deep emotional distress and led to her taking the extreme step.
