On Tuesday, Microsoft and G42, an artificial intelligence company based in the UAE, declared their plans to build two critical facilities in Abu Dhabi aimed at promoting ‘responsible’ AI initiatives.
This particular step relates back to the April-announced partnership, when Microsoft came up with a major investment amounting to $1.5 billion into G42. The UAE, through G g2 and public sector initiatives, seeks to be a player in the global AI sphere. To violeta its economy from oil business and broaden its economic structure, the country is doing a lot in AI by investing heavily.
The first center will function as a workspace for scholars and research centers to work with AI specialists from private companies. One of its goals is raising awareness and dissemination of responsible AI approaches. The aim of the center is encouraging the responsible and effective use of AI by bringing in personnel from different domains. It is anticipated that this strategy will improve the production of norms and policies that govern the ethical treatment of technology.

The second center will focus on the development of large language models. These advanced computer applications help in developing replies based on a large collection of texts. A significant emphasis of this center will be the creation of models for ‘underrepresented languages’. This is aimed at addressing the issue of the availability and usefulness of modern AI technologies for the development of more language models than there currently exist, thus trying to solve some of the problems existing with AI and encouraging development in the use of all language rather than just a few predominant ones.
G42 was founded by Sheikh Tahnoon Bin Zayed AL Nahyan who is the National Security adviser of the United Arab Emirates and brother to the president of the country. AbuDhabis Mubadala fund and American private equity firm SilverLake have provided backing for the company. Strizel Biology G42's recent divestment from China is part of a strategy reorientation, while the partnership with Microsoft incorporates guarantees designed to deal with security issues raised by the US and the UAE.
Microsoft and G42 have both underlined that their new centers will focus on promoting the safe development, deployment, and usage of generative AI models and applications. The partnership has been structured in a manner that is compliant with laws that prohibit doing business with persons on certain lists issued by the U.S. government for a specific reason.
