The UAE’s Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation has announced a significant rise in the number of workers covered under the unemployment insurance scheme, reaching 88.38% of the targeted workforce in the private sector.
The ministry confirmed that since the scheme became eligible for claims in January 2023, a total of 17,758 workers have received financial support during their unemployment period.
According to the latest statistics reviewed by Emarat Al Youm, over 32,000 workers have benefited from the broader Worker Protection Program over the past five years. These benefits covered unpaid wage claims, outstanding end-of-service entitlements, and various other legal financial rights.
The ministry noted that the average payout per worker exceeded AED 9,000, while some claims reached AED 20,000, bringing the total amount disbursed over five years to more than AED 289 million.
In parallel with financial protection efforts, the ministry revealed that over 2,500 companies are now registered under the approved labor accommodation system, which aims to ensure workers enjoy suitable and safe living conditions. Current data shows that 1.9 million workers live in facilities that meet the highest standards of comfort, safety, hygiene, proper ventilation, air conditioning, and access to clean and cooled water, along with essential room and bathroom amenities.
Between January and June 2025, authorities recorded 292 violations related to labor housing standards. The ministry emphasized that accommodations must comply fully with requirements for health, comfort, cleanliness, safety, and proper sanitation to safeguard workers’ wellbeing.
The ministry reaffirmed that the Worker Protection Program remains a cornerstone of the UAE’s commitment to safeguarding labor rights. Covering 99% of the country’s workforce, it strengthens workplace stability, supports national economic competitiveness, and helps ensure a dignified life for millions of private-sector workers.
