SriLankan Airlines is Sri Lanka's national airline. It was founded in 1979 as Air Lanka and began operations on 1 September 1979. The carrier adopted its current name in 1999 following a management partnership with Emirates that later ended. It operates passenger and cargo services linking Sri Lanka with destinations in Asia, the Middle East and Europe. The airline's main hub is Bandaranaike International Airport in Katunayake, near Colombo. It is owned by the Sri Lankan government and headquartered in Katunayake. SriLankan Airlines uses the IATA code UL and the ICAO code ALK, with the callsign SRI LANKAN. The carrier operates a mix of wide-body and narrow-body aircraft. Its international network is an important part of Sri Lanka's air travel and tourism links. SriLankan also works with other airlines through codeshare and connecting-flight agreements.
